Beer Passport packed, we headed off to Hluhluwe in search of rhinos—and a stamp in the Beer Passport!

A Stay at Hluhluwe Country Cottages
There was a warning for lots of rain, so instead of camping, we took up the offer from Craig Sutton to stay at Hluhluwe Country Cottages. The units are always fresh and welcoming, and there’s nothing quite like waking up to the sight of impalas wandering past your veranda. The pool provided a refreshing escape from the Zululand heat, and as always, we appreciated the convenience of being able to walk straight to Ngweni Brewery for a fantastic meal and a cold pint.
Exploring Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park
Before heading to the brewery, we set off early for a self-drive through Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, one of Africa’s oldest game reserves, established in 1895 to protect the region’s dwindling rhino population. Today, it remains a crucial sanctuary for wildlife conservation and is home to the Big Five. The rolling hills and dense bushveld made for breathtaking scenery, and we were lucky enough to spot elephants, rhinos, and even a pride of lions basking in the morning sun. There’s something about exploring the wild, knowing that a cold beer awaits at the end of the journey, that makes the experience even more special.
Unwinding at Ngweni Railroad Brewery
Returning to Ngweni Railroad Brewery after a day in the park felt like the perfect reward. The relaxed atmosphere, combined with their excellent selection of beers, made for an ideal way to wind down. Of course, we couldn’t resist a crisp Ngweni Lager to accompany a hearty meal. The food, as always, was top-notch, and the friendly staff made us feel right at home.
A Hidden Gem: Ilala Weavers
Ngweni Brewery and Cafe is situated on the same property as Ilala Weavers, a well-known curio shop that is surprisingly large and full of handcrafted treasures. Their coffee is absolutely amazing, and we made sure to take a moment to enjoy a cup before heading back to our cottage for the night.
The Perfect Combination
Ngweni Brewery and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park are a perfect combination for those who love good beer and great adventures. The thrill of spotting wildlife in the park, followed by the comfort of a cold pint in a welcoming setting, creates a truly unique and unforgettable experience. Whether you’re watching wildlife in the park or enjoying a sundowner at the brewery, it’s an experience that blends the best of both worlds. We’ll definitely be back for another round!
