Discovering My Working Genius and How It Helped Me Create the Beer Passport™

The Working Genius model is a simple yet powerful tool that identifies our natural strengths and challenges in how we work. It’s a framework that breaks down six types of ‘Genius’—Wonder, Discernment, Galvanizing, Enablement, Tenacity, and Invention—and helps us understand where we naturally excel and where we might struggle. For me, discovering my Genius types has been a revelation, offering clarity on why certain parts of my work feel natural and fulfilling, while others feel like an uphill battle.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I took the Working Genius assessment and discovered I’m a WD—Wonder and Discernment. This was a lightbulb moment. I realised that my tendency to think deeply and refine ideas repeatedly, while adding richness to my projects, sometimes holds me back from actually moving forward. I could see how, before this understanding, I would spin my ideas round and round, aiming to perfect them and inadvertently stalling my progress. I also saw why I naturally seek out people with the Genius of Invention (I) to help breathe life into my ideas and lean on those with Galvanizing (G) for clear direction when I feel stuck. Recognising that Enablement and Tenacity (E and T) are challenges for me has been equally freeing; it’s allowed me to focus on what I bring to the table without guilt and to seek support for tasks that don’t come naturally.

This new awareness played a huge role in the creation of the Beer Passport™. Developing the Beer Passport™ was a massive undertaking, requiring vision, refinement, and execution—a perfect example of what the Working Genius model describes as the stages of Ideation, Activation, and Implementation:

  • Ideation (Wonder and Invention): I leaned into my Wonder, letting myself dream big about what the Beer Passport™ could be and how it could connect people to the world of craft brewing. I then collaborated with Inventors—people who could generate fresh ideas—to add depth to the concept and think about ways to make it unique.
  • Activation (Discernment and Galvanizing): This is where my Discernment shone. I spent time refining the concept, identifying what would work best and ensuring it aligned with my vision and goals. I also relied on friends with the Galvanizing genius to keep the momentum going, ensuring we could rally support and energy around the project.
  • Implementation (Enablement and Tenacity): Recognising my challenges in Enablement and Tenacity, I reached out to team members who thrive in these areas. Their ability to support and follow through on the project’s finer details made all the difference in getting Beer Passport™ across the finish line.

Reflecting on the journey, it’s incredible to see how much has changed in the past decade. Ten years ago, when I set out to publish The Beer Book, I relied heavily on Rob Riedlinger to bring the project to life. At the time, I lacked the structure and confidence I needed, and Rob’s guidance was essential in turning my ideas into a tangible product. Without his support and expertise, I don’t think I could have pulled it off.

Fast forward to last year, and launching Beer Passport™ felt completely different. Equipped with new insights and experience—and a better understanding of my own strengths and challenges through the Working Genius model—I approached the project with clarity and a solid plan. This time, I felt prepared to manage the moving parts, to handle the uncertainties, and to trust in my own ability to bring the vision to life.

Reflecting on this journey, it’s interesting how many friends and community members have admitted they doubted I’d be able to “pull it off”—but they’re genuinely glad that I did! That feedback has deepened my appreciation for the process, showing me that with the right perspective and a supportive team, you can achieve what once seemed impossible. It’s a reminder that perseverance, community support, and staying true to your vision can turn even the most ambitious dreams into reality.

In my story, The Beer Troopy is the founder of the Beer Passport and the Beer Troopers community. Much like in the Working Genius model, The Beer Troopy depends on the community to step in with their strengths in Invention, Galvanizing, Enablement, and Tenacity. It’s this collaborative effort that keeps the vision alive and growing, turning ideas into action and dreams into shared experiences.

The Working Genius model has not only given me a new perspective on my strengths but has also empowered me to work in a way that’s truly valuable for my team and my community. With this insight, I’m excited to continue helping the Local Legends, my community of brewers and entrepreneurs, unlock their own potential. If you’re dreaming big, brainstorming a new idea, or planning for the future, I’d love to support you—whether by helping you dream up new possibilities with Wonder or refining your plans with Discernment. Together, we’ll bring clarity, focus, and purpose to your ideas, transforming them from vision to reality.
