Wakkerstroom is one of those charming small towns that feels like stepping back in time. It’s the second oldest town in Mpumalanga, nestled right on the KwaZulu-Natal border, and has become a popular destination for birders and nature enthusiasts. For Beer Troopers, it offers a perfect mix of countryside charm, great beer, and fascinating local stories.
The town itself is small enough to explore on foot or bicycle, and the atmosphere is pure countryside magic. The shops along Van Riebeek and Badenhorst streets offer a slice of rural life that seems untouched by time—shelves stocked with fresh cow’s milk, farm cheese, homemade preserves, rusks, and handmade souvenirs. It’s the kind of place where the pace of life slows down, and you can soak in the beauty of simplicity.
A Bird Lover’s Paradise
Wakkerstroom is home to three major bird habitats: wetlands, grasslands, and forests. Birders from all over flock to this area hoping to catch a glimpse of rare birds like Rudd’s Lark, Botha’s Lark, and other endemic species. The wetland reserve, with its four bird hides, is a peaceful spot to enjoy nature at its finest.
Nature on Your Doorstep
If you’re the type who loves getting out into nature, grab a Wakkerstroom Hiking, Biking, or Running Guide from the Old Bioscope tourist info centre. There’s plenty to keep you busy, whether it’s the 65 km MTB route to Zaaihoek Dam or an 8.8 km walk to the summit of Ossewakop. You’ll feel like you’re exploring untouched landscapes, with breathtaking views around every corner.
For me, Wakkerstroom holds some interesting child-hood memories. I grew up on a farm near Confidence, about 100 km from here. Back then, Wakkerstroom was a cold and deserted place where our sheep farmer neighbours trekked to in the winter, herding sheep from the lowlands to the highveld. It was a common sight, and many of my farming friends still own land in the high-lying areas around Wakkerstroom to this day. And if you dig deep enough into Wakkerstroom’s stories, you’ll come across some quirky tales—like my distant cousin who, from his barstool at the Wakkerstroom Hotel, once leaned out of the window like a sniper and shot the rooster off the top of the church tower, all for a bit of Saturday afternoon fun!
Of course, a trip to Wakkerstroom wouldn’t be complete without visiting some of its local gems:
• The Red Rooster Pub and Restaurant – This spot is an absolute favourite for the Beer Troopy. With its old-world atmosphere and laid-back vibe, it’s the perfect place to grab a cold local craft beer from Wakkerstroom on tap. The food is proper country fare—simple, hearty, and full of flavour. It’s a stop that feels like coming home every time.
• Vleiland Dop & Tjop – You don’t often come across a butcher that doubles as a bottle store, but Vleiland Dop & Tjop does just that. Heinie offers top-notch vacuum-packed meats, biltong, and freshly cut rump. Plus, he’s open to expanding his beer range, so we’ll be helping him source some more craft brews. Freshly sliced biltong and a cold beer—what more could you ask for?
• Theressa Coffee Roastery – Hidden behind the Red Rooster Pub, this little coffee spot is a true Wakkerstroom treasure. The coffee is roasted with care, and each cup reflects the personal touch that makes this town so special. Perfect for a peaceful moment after a day of exploring.
• Village Bakery – For a taste of nostalgia, stop by Village Bakery, a delightful bakery, coffee shop, and deli offering tasty treats just like ouma used to make. It’s the perfect spot to grab a pastry, a cup of coffee, or some local goodies to take home. You’ll find their baked goods are fresh, comforting, and full of flavour.
• Honeymoon Valley Cheese – Every small town needs a cheesery, and Wakkerstroom is lucky to have Honeymoon Valley. Their range of cheeses is excellent, but the real standouts are their yogurt and cream from Zaaiberg Dairy. If you’re after local, farm-fresh dairy products, this is the place to go.
• Old Bioscope – If you’re looking for tourist info or ideas for hiking, biking, or running routes, stop by the Old Bioscope. It’s where you can pick up guides and get a feel for all the outdoor activities Wakkerstroom has to offer.
Wakkerstroom may be small, but it’s packed with charm, history, and fantastic spots to eat, drink, and explore. Whether you’re a birder, nature enthusiast, or just someone who enjoys a good beer in a great setting, this town has something for everyone. Next time you’re heading through Mpumalanga, don’t just drive past—stop by Wakkerstroom and soak in the beauty of this timeless countryside gem.
