How the Beer Passport Turned Into Something Much Bigger

From Lockdown Idea to a National Adventure

If you’ve been with us since the early days, you’ll know where this all began.

It was lockdown. Breweries were struggling. We wanted to give people a reason to get out (when they could), to discover independent brewers again — not just the ones with the biggest billboards, but the ones with the biggest hearts.

And so, the Beer Passport™ was born.

A printed travel companion. A challenge to explore. A way to reconnect with the small-town beer scene — and each other.

All guided by an old Land Cruiser Troop Carrier we affectionately call Beer Troopy.

And to be honest? It worked.

Better than I could’ve imagined.

But Then Something Beautiful Happened…

As we hit the road, we started finding more than just beer.

Brewers introduced us to coffee roastersfarm stallscheesemakersbakerschocolatiers, and other Local Legends — people creating flavour and magic in the places they call home.

These weren’t just side trips. They were part of the same story.

That’s when the idea grew.

What if the passport wasn’t just about beer?

What if it became a tool to discover all the lekker places across the country?

That’s When Lekker Passport™ Was Born

We created a new platform that expands the mission beyond brewing, while still honouring our roots.

Today, you’ll find three flagship themed passports:

  • 🍺 Beer Pass – for brewers, taprooms, and beer-loving venues
  • ☕ Coffee Pass – for cafés, espresso bars, and roasteries
  • 🤙 Lekker Pass – for farm stalls, handmade goods, and small-town gems

These now all live under one roof: 👉 lekkerpassport.com

Whether you arrived via beerpassport.co.za, followed the story on BeerTroopy.com, or picked up a printed passport from a local taproom — you’re part of the adventure.

What’s Changing — and What’s Staying the Same

  • The Beer Passport™ is still going strong
  • The printed passports are being refreshed and reimagined (they’ll be back soon)
  • The digital platform at lekkerpassport.com is now the home base for all future journeys
  • Digital check-ins, rewards, and curated trails are already live
  • Printed passports will now be even more personal — with more space for your journey

Why This Is a Big Job

To do this right, we need to reconnect with every destination that’s been part of this story — and invite new ones to join.

That means:

  • Updating listings
  • Confirming who still wants to participate
  • Helping each venue order or update their rubber stamp — the heart of the printed experience

It’s a big task.

And it’s going to take some time.

But we’re on it — one conversation, one stop, one legend at a time.
