Our first stop on the Beer Post mission took us to Maputo, home of Mafalala Cervejas Brewery. Since the brewery doesn’t yet have the infrastructure to offer on-site tastings, we met with Hélder, the co-founder of Mafalala, at the BuSo Restaurant. When big-name brands dominated the local market and no bar was willing to serve Mafalala beer—at least not without the incentives that larger breweries could offer—BuSo was established as a place where all Mafalala brews could be poured on tap. And, of course, you can enjoy a proper meal there too.

We were warmly welcomed by Hélder, who guided us through a tasting of all three Mafalala beers: a Lager, an IPA, and a Trigo (wheat beer). There’s even a limited-edition Lager infused with a hint of lemongrass, perfect for those hot Maputo days.

Hélder’s passion for beer shines through in every detail, and we left with Mafalala t-shirts, which we proudly wore during our night out in Maputo.
Founded in 2019, Mafalala Brewery has been growing steadily. They currently have the capacity to ferment up to 11,000 litres of beer at a time. A Lager takes around six weeks to ferment, while the IPA needs only two to three weeks. If they brewed exclusively Lager, they could produce an impressive 95,333 litres per year. Mafalala is also the only brewery in Mozambique that is majority-owned by Mozambicans.

We handed over our most precious cargo, the Beer Passports, and Hélder even wrote a personal, handwritten note in ours – thanks so much, Hélder!
