Our Podcast Journey to the Top of Sani has been a celebration of the rich heritage, remarkable people, and breathtaking landscapes that make the Southern Drakensberg and Lesotho so extraordinary. Each episode has taken us to a new destination, showcasing the stories of local legends and the unique experiences they offer.
We began our journey at Peel’s Honey, a Midlands Meander institution just off the N3. Established in 1924 by Jack Peel, this family-run operation is South Africa’s oldest honey producer. At Peel’s, we explored their Travelogue, Farmstall, and Legacy ranges of honey products and sampled a fascinating honey tasting experience featuring over ten varieties. Derrick Dos Santos shared the inspiring story of Peel’s Honey and their dedication to supporting local beekeepers. We also discussed exciting opportunities to collaborate with craft brewers, bringing local flavours to the forefront.
Next, we headed to Wild Sky Paragliding in Bulwer, where we met Hans and Ria Fokkens, who have created a vibrant community of paragliding enthusiasts. Just days after our conversation, tragedy struck when their lodge was destroyed by fire. Despite this devastating loss, the response from the paragliding community has been overwhelming, showcasing the resilience and solidarity of this remarkable group. Hans shared his passion for introducing others to the magic of flying, and we encourage anyone interested in paragliding to book a tandem flight or support Wild Sky via their BackaBuddy campaign.
Our journey continued to the historic Reichenau Mission, midway between Bulwer and Underberg. Founded in the 19th century by Trappist monks, Reichenau has been “running on water” for over a century. Hugh Bland, a chronicler of KwaZulu-Natal’s architectural heritage, took us on a journey through the region’s Trappist missions, while Peter Frow introduced us to the restoration of the historic water-powered Reichenau Mill. This sustainable village stands as a testament to the resourcefulness of its founders and the dedication of those working to preserve its heritage today.
From Reichenau, we travelled to Himeville, the gateway to Sani Pass. Here, we met David Peo of diThabeng Private Tours, who shared his expert knowledge of the pass and the hidden treasures of Lesotho. David offers private tours that include not only the iconic switchbacks of Sani Pass but also the cultural and natural wonders of the highlands. His advice to prepare for unpredictable weather and challenging roads is invaluable for anyone planning to visit. We also spoke with Mothiba Thamae from Sani Wines, a local winery crafting unique highland wines that reflect the rugged beauty of Lesotho.
Our journey concluded at Sani Mountain Escape, home to the highest pub in Africa. Perched at the top of the legendary Sani Pass, this iconic lodge has been welcoming adventurers for over 50 years. Khapametsi Maleke, the inspiring owner of Sani Mountain Lodge, shared her incredible story of acquiring and running this legendary destination. From exploring the Basotho pony trails and hiking routes to raising a glass above the clouds, Sani Mountain Escape is a bucket-list destination for any traveller.
Our Podcast Journey to the Top of Sani has been a true celebration of the local legends, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable experiences that make this region so special. Thank you for joining us as we explored these incredible destinations. Let’s continue to toast to adventure, discovery, and the people who make it all possible. Cheers to the road less travelled!
