The Normandien Pass is an absolute must for anyone looking to explore the scenic beauty between Memel and Newcastle. Linking the Free State with KwaZulu-Natal, this rugged, off-the-beaten-track route is perfect for adventurers like me. I’ve always wanted to explore the region between Harrismith and Newcastle, and when Google Maps warned me of delays on the N11 between Newcastle and Ladysmith, I knew it was the perfect time to finally take the Normandien Pass.
Winding through stunning mountain landscapes, the pass offers panoramic views of rolling hills and valleys. It’s a rustic route, but that’s exactly what makes it special. I took my time, soaking in the scenery, and planned to reward myself with a pub lunch at the Green Lantern Inn at the top of Van Reenen’s Pass—another favourite stop of mine.
If you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend taking this scenic detour via Normandien Pass. It’s a bit of an adventure, but the peace and views are worth it.
Starting at the foot of the Klein Drakensberg, where the now-famous Thirsti Water originates, the journey is surrounded by beautiful farmlands and magnificent pine plantations. As you climb, the landscape transforms as you pass through the Ncandu State Forest Nature Reserve, the second-largest indigenous forest in KwaZulu-Natal. The grassy plains and majestic yellowwood gorges offer breathtaking views as you wind your way through the mountains.
Whether you’re exploring the region or heading from Gauteng to the coast, consider taking this adventurous route. It’s an unforgettable detour offering stunning scenery, peace, and the perfect way to break up your trip.
