The Troopy Build: A Rite of Passage

As any seasoned Troopy owner will tell you, sooner or later, you face the inevitable—your Troopy gets “the haircut.” It’s a rite of passage for us Troopy enthusiasts, and in March 2024, the Beer Troopy was no exception. Like every other adventure-ready Troop Carrier out there, mine went under the blade to receive its defining transformation: the roof tent conversion.

When you own a Troopy, you realize that it’s more than just a vehicle; it’s a lifestyle. And that lifestyle often demands modifications to make the rig as versatile and functional as possible. For me, the roof conversion was the next logical step in turning the Beer Troopy into the ultimate overlanding machine. After all, it’s not just about driving; it’s about turning your journey into a seamless blend of travel, exploration, and, of course, comfort on the road.

The “Haircut”: Why the Roof Conversion?

Troop Carriers are built to conquer rough terrains, endless dirt roads, and remote wilderness. But while their ruggedness is unmatched, one aspect that limits their overlanding potential is the fixed roof. Enter the roof tent conversion—a mod that dramatically increases the usability of the Troopy for long-distance travel.

For those who aren’t familiar, this process involves cutting off the original roof of the vehicle and replacing it with a custom-built, pop-up roof tent. It sounds drastic, and in many ways, it is. But the benefits far outweigh any hesitation. The roof tent conversion opens up the cabin, creating standing room and transforming your Troopy into a self-contained living space. It’s a game changer for anyone looking to spend extended time off the grid.

Alu-Innovations Kronos Roof Conversion

In my case, I opted for the Alu-Innovations Kronos Roof Conversion—a top-of-the-line modification that adds a pop-up roof tent and plenty of storage while maintaining the rugged look and feel of the Troopy. Alu-Innovations is known for its craftsmanship and durability, which is essential when you’re dealing with the harsh South African conditions. I wanted a setup that could withstand the elements, offer comfort, and last through the long miles I plan to cover with the Beer Troopy.

The Build Process

Cutting the roof off a vehicle isn’t something you take lightly. The experts at Alu-Innovations made the process seamless. The original roof was removed, and in its place, they fitted the Kronos Roof System, which includes a pop-up tent that folds up neatly while driving and extends into a comfortable sleeping space when parked. Inside, the conversion added standing room—perfect for those moments when you just need to stretch out after a long day on the road. There’s also additional storage, which is always a plus when you’re hauling camping gear, food, and the occasional crate of craft beer.

Ready for Anything

Now, with the roof tent conversion complete, the Beer Troopy is ready for any adventure. Whether it’s exploring remote trails, visiting small-town breweries, or simply heading out for a weekend escape, I now have the freedom to park anywhere and set up camp in minutes. Plus, having a comfortable, elevated sleeping space means I can truly enjoy the overland experience without worrying about pitching a tent or finding suitable accommodation.

The “haircut” has officially turned the Beer Troopy into a full-blown overlanding beast, capable of handling both the wildest terrain and the most relaxing nights under the stars.

The Road Ahead

With the roof tent conversion done, the possibilities for the Beer Troopy are endless. I’m already planning new routes and adventures across South Africa, eager to see where this freshly modified rig will take me. From hidden small towns to untouched wilderness, the Beer Troopy is now more than ever ready to explore, one pint at a time.

Stay tuned for updates on the road as I put this incredible conversion to the test!
